PICOT Question

In post-surgical patients (P) does the use of heparins (I) versus physical methods (C) (compression stocks and calf/foot pumps) prevent deep vein thrombosis (O).

Search Terms

Search terms are essential in finding appropriate and relative articles. The search terms used were initially, “DVT” and “DVT prevention”. However, in order to be more specific the terms “DVT prevention” with “surgery”, “heparin”, and “compression stockings”.

Databases Utilized for Search

The databases used were Thoreua and CINAHL Plus with Full Text. CINAHL is a great database and has more than 750 journals related to nursing and health care. CINAHL also provides systematic reviews, controlled trials and cohort studies to name a few. I truly appreciate this database (Walden University Library, n.d.b).These two databases provided an abundance of information to work with in order to create the PICOT formulated question.

Search Results, Articles Returned, and Changes from use of Boolean Operators

Initially, when searching, I used the terms “DVT” and “DVT prevention”. However, these results yielded 1,000 or more articles and research studies. In order to limit the number of results, I used boolean operators such as “AND”. Boolean operators assist with combining different words and phrases. They include “AND”, “OR” and “NOT” (Library of Congress, n.d.a). I believe boolean operators truly assisted in providing great results. After using the search “DVT prevention AND surgery AND heparin AND compression stockings” I was able to yield 4 really great results.

Database Strategies to Increase Rigor and Effectiveness

In order to be more successful in finding a great research article or research study there are a few things one must consider in order to be effective. First, one must use boolean operators, which was used in this case. Second, it is important to use limits in order to; for example, find a more time appropriate article. Limits can be set for time, language and location of the published material (Library of Congress, n.d.). Other ways to increase rigor and effectiveness include collaborating with librarians and using full-text articles (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).
