for every module this term you are expected to interact with one piece of outside material

For every Module this term, you are expected to interact with one piece of outside material/text of your choosing—an image, painting, song, story, poem, photo, sculpture, advertisment, etc—in order to help crystalize your knowledge of the materials covered. Your assignment is to analyze the selected material/text in order to convey the depth of your understanding of some aspect of the preceding Module, as covered in your reading, our shared lecture notes, and this unit’s Panopto lecture. How does the material/text you’ve chosen embody the main themes and concerns of the Module? How does it help you to navigate one of the primary issues at hand? Why, specifically, do you think that this selected piece of material/text helps you to better comprehend a dimension of the Module? There are no right or wrong answers, simply your answers—in other words, you are asked here to analyze/interpret the material/text you’ve chosen in order to communicate to me your grasp of the subject matter we’ve covered in this Module. Please aim for approximately two to three paragraphs in your written analysis here.

Ideally, you will find a text/material that speaks to you personally—that is drawn from your own life, your own experiences, or somehow relates to you personally. This material can be contemporary, historical, public, or private—or anywhere in between. The point is for your selction to speak to you. For the first few Modules, I will provide ideas/examples that you can elect to use for this assignment. Feel free to choose any of the below as your subject for analysis in this assignment, or to select your own—there are limitless choices!

For this second Outside Text Engagement, pertaining to our recent reading in the Romantic period, I have compiled below a few possible sources of inspiration that you’re welcome to utilize:

Films:

Stacy Peralta, “Riding Giants” (a killer surfing documentary about mankind’s ongoing relationship to non-human forces beyond our control. How the surfers relate to the immense sublimity of the waves throughout this film—how they describe them, personify them, imagine their power and authority—is pitch-perfect romanticism at its finest, in the 20th Century. **Available for Free: Streaming now under our ‘Library Resources’ Tab on Canvas Homepage**

Andy Goldsworthy, “Rivers and Tides” (Goldsworthy is a contemporary artist whose sensibility, especially as it pertains to the natural world and its material/forms, fits nicely in with the Romantics—a must-see for anyone inclined toward Romantic sensibilities): https://www.amazon.com/Rivers-Tides-Andy-Goldsworthy/dp/B07GYVR5HL/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=rivers+and+tides&qid=1579048162&s=instant-video&sr=1-1 (Links to an external site.)

Paintings:

J.M.W. Turner’s “Tintern Abbey” (to be considered in conjunction with William Wordsworth’s poem of the same title): http://www.victorianweb.org/painting/turner/wc/12.html (Links to an external site.)
