- For the literature essay, the consider focusing your discussion on one example of a literary work, or one genre of a literary work.. The example literary work might be represented in oral, written, print, film, or digital form, so this includes speeches, letters, articles, books, movies, podcasts, radio or television broadcasts or series, and so on.
First, identify an example of a work that is of interest. The work can be from any time period. Refer to the textbook for examples of literature that catch your interest. Next, conduct research to find credible background information about the work. In addition to the textbook, consult the Seminole State College library and article databases.
- For the literature essay, consider background information on these topics: when and where was the work created, by whom, and how was the work shared with audiences; brief biographical information about the author; historical information about the time period in which the work was created, and key events or concerns of the time; how the work was similar to work that came before and how it differed; how the work is similar to or different from work that we are familiar with today, and whether or how a previous work might have influenced its creation. Include in the paper a discussion that compares or contrasts the work you selected as a literary example with a piece of literature that came before it. Consider how the literary work has represented or influenced culture. This paper assignment is essentially a comparison-contrast essay.
