Project Part 1: Write a Job Description

Introduction:

Accurate and well-written job descriptions are extremely important. Using job descriptions will help an organization better understand the experience and skill base needed to enhance the success of the company. They help in the hiring, evaluation and potentially terminating of employees. All too often, there is a misunderstanding of what a position entails and a well-prepared job description can help both sides share a common understanding.

Step One: Select the Position for your Project Assignments and Locate Online Job Postings

You will need to select a specific position (by Job Title) that you will use for all four of the Project Assignments required for this course. Use the following guidelines as you select the position you will use:

  • Choose a straightforward job with clear cut duties, responsibilities, specifications and qualifications. Generally, line level positions are easier to work with than those of senior leadership.
  • Select a job and/or industry you are familiar with or perhaps a job title you hope to obtain after finishing your degree.
  • Spend some time doing an internet search for job postings for positions you are considering. Hint — Make sure that there are plenty of postings to choose from, so that you will have material work with for your project.
  • In section 1 of the Project Part 1 (see below), you need to discuss three online job postings for the position you select. For each you need to explain why you selected the particular posting (as opposed to others you might have looked at) and provide a hyperlink to the web address where the post can be located.
  • Step Two: Complete the Written Assignment for Project Part 1

The written assignment for Project Part 1 is comprised of four sections: (1) introduction with rationale for selected online postings, (2) a written narrative discussing the activities required to perform the selected position, (3) a completed job description template and (4) a conclusion answering the two required questions. See specific directions and requirements below.

    1. Introduce the position you have selected. Explain your reasons for choosing it and provide any background information about the position that someone unfamiliar with it would need to know. Next, discuss the three online job postings for the position you select (see “Getting Started” above and make sure you capture the website address to include your work cited!) For each, explain why you selected the particular posting (as opposed to others you might have looked at) and provide a hyperlink to the web address where the post can be located.

    2. Based on the three examples you select write a narrative discussing following:

  • describe the daily activities of the job
  • identify the knowledge necessary to successfully complete the job
  • identify the skills necessary to successfully complete the job
  • identify the capabilities (behaviors) necessary to successfully complete the job
  • When you complete this section, be sure to cover routine tasks (tasks that you would expect the person in this position to perform on a regular basis) and non-routine or adaptive ways you would expect the person in this position to perform tasks when situations/circumstances change.

Project Part 2: Recruitment Sources and Selection Instruments

Before beginning this and all project section activities review the General Written Section Guidelines and the rubric for written assignments.

    Introduction:
In section one of the project a job description was developed for a specific employment position.
For this part of the project, you will now explore, discuss the steps needed to identify appropriate recruitment sources and create a selection process based on the same chose employment position.

    Step One: Exploring Recruitment Sources

    • Identify appropriate places that companies use to recruit for the position you explored in your project section one job description. Remember, it is not as simple as posting an ad in the newspaper or on Craigslist! A suggested approach would include a Google Search for the job title to see what recruitment sources; job boards, industry magazines, newspapers, company websites or blogs as examples are returned.
    • After reviewing various posts, select at least two (2) recruitment posts to use as you complete the requirements of Project Part 2. Be sure to look at a variety of postings before selecting the ones you will use for the project and be sure to have a clear rationale for the selections you make.

Step Two: Complete the Written Assignment for Project Part 2

The written assignment for Project Part 2 is comprised of three sections: (1) Discussion of online job postings, creating a posting and supporting rationale, (2) Creation of a selection process with supporting rationale, (3) a Conclusion answering the two required questions. See specific directions and requirements below.

Remember to cite sources (textbook, articles, etc.) through out to support your statements. Your project discussion cannot be based on personal opinion alone.

    1. Discuss the two job postings you selected for Project Part 2. Provide a hyperlink to each and explain why you selected each, over other postings you viewed when completing research for this assignment.

Using information from the two actual postings from the recruitment sources you selected (see above), create a new, original job posting for the position you are completing your project on.

After providing your new job posting, explain (in paragraph format) what elements chose to use from each of the original job posting, identify what elements you added or adjusted and explain why the changes were made. Finally, discuss how your posting is more effective, legally compliant, and is designed to attract the “right” candidate.

    1. Next, create a selection process. For example, would there be a capability or cognitive test used? Are you going to interview all candidates? Some? How will you determine how many you will interview? What process will you use for the interviews – where will they occur? Who will be involved? How long will they last?

Provide examples of 5 screening questions you will ask of all candidates. Be sure that all questions focus on job-specific requirements. For each question, provide the following:

    1. The wording of the question you intend to ask with explanation of how the question links to the job description you submitted in Week 4.
    2. A sample response, indicating what you would consider to be a quality response from a candidate.
    3. An explanation of how asking this question would help you make a hiring decision.

Throughout this section remember to specific about the process you plan to implement and think through each phase, step by step.

    • Finally, write the Conclusion for this assignment by writing a minimum of 2 paragraphs to address the following — Explain why your final selection process is sufficient to use as it relates to the employee life cycle and explain the potential issues or concerns that exist when organizations choose not to use a systematic approach for recruitment and selection.
